The
Transfiguration of JesusPeter
said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three
tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he
said ... And a voice came from the cloud, saying: This is my beloved Son, hear him.
And
when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone (Luke 9: 28-36, 33, 35 and
36)."28
pass about eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James and
went up the mountain to pray. 29
And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment
white and glistening. 30
And behold, two men talked with him, who were Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared
in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.
32
But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: awake, they saw his
glory and the two men standing with him. 33
And it came to parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us
to be here: and let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and
one for Elias: not knowing what he said. 34
While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them: and they feared as
they entered the cloud. 35
And there came a voice from the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
36
And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone and they were silent, and
in those days told no one what they had seen. "

CONTENTWhat passage so unique and
mysterious! The
Transfiguration of Jesus is one of the most extraordinary events of the Bible
for their important theological implications. Above
all it is a supernatural vision shared by three disciples of
Jesus.Facing it is logical to
ask: how would this event? What really should
have happened there on that mountain? And
in any case, what has such implications or lessons for the human vision of the
current global village?
The Transfiguration
as shape change.
The
Transfiguration of Jesus is concerned primarily with the view and the image.
"Transfiguration" means
"change of form or figure." These
two figures actually represent the Old Testament itself: Moses represents the
Law and the Prophets Elijah. And
Christ is the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets (Matthew 5:17) "Think not
that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but
to fulfill.""Metamorphosis of
Christ." Numerous
scholars attempted sacred text reveal how such an experience would have affected
the three closest disciples of the Master. However,
what is most evident is that the transfiguration scene provides a triple
revelation. They
also represent the living and the dead, for Moses died and knows his burial
place, while Elijah was taken to heaven alive to appear again to announce the
time of God's salvation in Christ.
Then
Jesus appeared together on the Mount of Transfiguration, Moses and Elijah
confirm that the Messiah-Saviour is here, and that He is the Son of God whom the
Father himself testifies, the Lord of Creation, the Old Testament and New, of the
living and the dead.
The
Transfiguration of Christ itself is the fulfillment of all the manifestations of
God perfected and completed a consummation in the person of Jesus
Christ.
The
Transfiguration of Christ reveals our own destiny as Christians, the ultimate
fate of all human beings and all creation, the radical transformation of the
self and its glorification by the majestic splendor of God.
Unveil"Revelation"
literally means "unveiling" is to take away the veil to reveal that which may be
hidden and that at first glance is not understood. Hence,
understanding the biblical revelation is what many people do not see and when
the veil is still on. (2
Corinthians 3:14-16) "14 But their minds were made dull, for to this day, when
they read the old covenant, remaineth the same veil, which is removed by Christ.
15
But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the veil is upon their heart.
16
But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. "
REVELATION OF GODTransfiguration
is the revelation of a faithful God who keeps his promises throughout history, a
God who has made a covenant with man and to be trusted, although remain hidden
for many, but it is revealed his
small remnant, and that allows us to hear his voice even from the cloud of his
presence.
Revelation of
ChristTransfiguration
is also the revelation of the divinity of Jesus Christ. He was not
only man but also God, the Son of God made person. This
Christ transfigured, a few days later, he was disfigured by sin of humanity
itself at Calvary. From
the glory of God, Christ went to the Passion, namely, weak, suffering,
humiliation. Therefore
the Father say, "This is my beloved Son: hear him."
DISCLOSURE OF MYSTERY
MANTransfiguration is
the revelation of the mystery of man. What is man? The human being is a
pilgrim here below, on Earth. Walker
is not going to live forever in this world, not rooted like trees in the ground,
to be always seated on the contrary, man is temporal, are passing through this
life and that is precisely what comes
to say also the transfiguration: the human being is a pilgrim who can become a
citizen of the afterlife.
As
Christians, we live in the fragility of the body, waiting for our own glorious
body transfiguration. This
is precisely what we represent here the disciples of Jesus: the man himself:
Peter, James and John very sleepy, but staying awake. Sometimes
we travel through life this way, sleepy, almost without realizing what is
happening to us. But
the Lord wants us to be awake, with eyes open, watching what the essence of our
life, which is fundamental to our existence, which is the sense that God wants
for us: staying awake.
PRAYER TO VIEW DRIVE."It
happened about eight days after these words ..." (Lc.9: 28). What words are they? The announcement of the death of
Jesus. Notice
verse (Lc.9: 22), the teacher had said: "It is necessary that the Son of Man
must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests., And
scribes, and be killed and the third
day rise. " And
Jesus says, "But I tell you in truth, there be some standing here, which shall
not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God" (Lc.9: 27). When they saw the
kingdom of God those who were there? What does this text? Precisely Christ is
referring to the transfiguration. Those
"some" were Peter, John and James, who at the scene of the Transfiguration (saw
the glory of Jesus) is, the kingdom of God, as the verse says (Lc.9: 32).
"Jesus
took these three men and went with them to the mountain to pray." The
text says (Lc.9: 29) "and in the meantime he prayed, the fashion of his
countenance was altered and his raiment white and
glistening."
Luke
is the only evangelist who does not pronounce the word "transfiguration".
This has a very specific reason.
Lucas
was aware of the mindset that Christians pose coming from the pagan world.
These
have yet worldly thoughts in his mind, despite having converted to Christianity,
many concepts of the ancient religions. In
religions such legends abound about men who are transfigured into gods or
demigods became. These
ideas were common in religions, hence Lucas wished to make it clear that what
happened to Christ on that mountain was not a myth like those other doctrines
than the doctrine of Christ, but a reality historical.
God breaks into the world of
menThe world
of God passed like lightning shooting the world of men. Such
an event occurs in the Gospel, on four separate occasions: at the
Transfiguration of Jesus, at the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, in the baptism
of Christ after the resurrection, when the Master appeared to the disciples and
ate with them . Not
only opens the history of salvation, but time is concentrated and past figures
appear as Elijah and Moses. Shown divine history of time,
but also space. The
miracle is not only in the splendor of God, because God is God is not a big
surprise. The
miracle is precisely that God is man, chosen incarnate in a human being and a
humiliating death by martyrdom like a common criminal. Now that's miracle: the
humiliation of Jesus. The
fact that God created all the galaxies in the universe, comes to Earth because
he loves the man, knows his weakness and want to rescue him from that situation,
yes is the greatest miracle of the cosmos.
Changed from glory to
GlorySometimes God's world opens to
humans. Is not that
what happens when you pray with all your heart? The
apostle Paul, writing to the Corinthians he says: "But we all, with open face
beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed from glory
to glory in the same image, as by the Spirit of the Lord" (2 Co. 3:18). When
we become Christians we are configured according to the image of Christ, we are
united to Him by faith, we move to greater perfection aided by the Holy Spirit,
but above all through prayer.
The
reason that Jesus went up the mountain was, above all, to pray. His transfiguration
occurs while praying, as he prayed. And this leads us to
ask:1) What is our Mount
particular?2)
Is there a place in my life intimate transfiguration, where I can pray and grow
as a person, as a Christian, where I ask the Lord for forgiveness for my
mistake, for my sin and my wickedness?3)
Or maybe this place does not exist, or it is a desert landscape where I never
want to stay too long?4)
Is there in me about my life a spiritual place, a mound of prayer where I
glimpse the image of Christ and his words resonate loudly in my
ears?5) Or did I neglect
my prayer life?
Against
all that is said, prayer is not flight or escape from this world, but
transfiguration of reality. Because
when we pray for truth, we have no choice but to change our world. As
you pray, change my reality and recovery forces to overcome the difficulties
that the Lord allows in my life, to pray, rest in Christ and learn to forgive,
to pray, I'm being as repentant prodigal son coming home to the
Father.
The
men and women of prayer are people who go beyond material things and even are
able to change their appearance, because they discover the positive side of
every event.
Who
knows how to pray and realizes that, basically, everything, absolutely
everything, helps fine. Sincere
prayer can make prayer captures a sense of eternity, that is, the presence of
God in ordinary things, we appreciate as positive or negative, every day.
The
prayer of faith breaks the bars of the prison strong disbelief and doubt that we
incarcerate too often, because it eliminates the frustration and loneliness.
Prayer
is a whirlwind into eternity, as a gateway to the stars, and that brings us to
the other side of the reality of the third heaven.
Hence,
when the devil steals prayer, lost the habit of praying and meditating alone,
away with reality so grim and pessimistic tones full of reasonings of
men.But
who prays can say with Peter: Master, it is good for us to be here. It
is truly beautiful escape reality but camping in daily life, ie in our
individual responsibilities.It is
talking to God but without forgetting our place on Earth. Act
as parents, children, brothers, workers, employers, etc.., Knowing that the Lord
sees us and hears us. Talking
to God, but without losing sight of the reality of every day, as they are not
incompatible worlds but intimately linked. It
is impossible to access the things of the Lord without experiencing both the
human. You
can not truly love God if, in the depths of the soul, no hatred toward his
brother. This
is the same thing, there is no possibility of one without the
other.
The
text says: "And behold, two men talked with him, who were Moses and Elijah, who
appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he should accomplish at
Jerusalem" (Lc.9 :30-31) . As
we know, Moses and Elijah were two great characters of the Old Testament, whose
return to Earth was an expectation of the Jewish people. All
Jews were convinced that such figures would return back to the world of men.
However,
in the event of transfiguration come but not to stay among mortals, but simply
to indicate that we should not wait for them to them. His mission was only to point
the way to men. Who really was Jesus
stood.
Indeed,
Moses prefigured the death of Christ through the celebration of Easter and
animal sacrifices, as well as Elijah had anticipated the power of the
resurrection of the Lord, to resurrect the son of the Shunammite. Therefore,
the presence of these two historical characters was timely. However,
they vanished after pointing to Christ who would be really the ultimate winner
of death.
The selfishness
of PEDROHowever,
once again makes its appearance also the awkwardness of man: "And as they
departed from him, Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here:
and let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for
Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said "(Lc.9: 33). Shelters
were shacks or huts made of branches plant where shepherds used to spend the
nights. Also
performed such constructions, improvised during the harvest
festival.
Peter,
James and John, with the possibility of building three tabernacles, think of how
good it was spent during these festivities. The truth is
that they grasped the meaning of that vision. Stopping
on Earth to the inhabitants of heaven, and will do so by offering huts made of
branches! Today
many creatures try to make the same with the divine: enclose God in temples,
churches, chapels, crosses, amulets or products supposedly miraculous, as if the
divine, could withdraw into the material!
Jesus
speaks of dying in Jerusalem, but they only think about enjoying the glory
dazzling, intend to stop, set, camping at the very place that should be a
starting point for the task that awaits them, want a final resting place to
avoid the risk of
the cross, but want the light without going through the darkness of Calvary, so
the gospel indicates that Peter did not know what he said.
Sometimes,
believers also behave like Peter, as we like to settle down and settle into the
group, forgetting to be disciples of Christ means to live as pilgrims.
Being a
Christian is like being suspended between heaven and earth. We
can never "count the stars" without first facing the darkness of
night.
"While
he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them: and they feared as they
entered the cloud. And
a voice came from the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him. "
(Lc.9
:34-35). In
the biblical scenery, clouds are almost always a symbol of the presence and
glory of God. The
divine voice proclaims the identity of the Son and the need to hear his words
means you can dispense with Moses and Elijah, just to have life in Jesus Christ,
and that Christ alone is the chosen one who will die for us on the Calvary.
A word is worth a thousand
picturesIn
these verses we have the impression that Peter and the other apostles more
respect because the voice that vision. Seeing
the transfiguration of Christ, immediately try to mobilize to build three
tabernacles, however, the voice from the cloud will produce fear. It
is often said that a picture is worth a thousand words, but here is rather the
opposite: a word worth a thousand pictures. It
is as if the apostles remain more surprised by the word of God for the image of
the transfiguration.
The "view" is subject to "listen".
What a great lesson for us today!
Fever
visions, apparitions or private revelations never replace Scripture.
Also
Jesus said (John 20:29) "Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed."
Today
there are visions, but listening and meditating on the Word of God that we walk
yearning exceeds mirages or appearances, but the voice from the cloud of
Scripture. The
only vision spoiled here on Earth is what is bound to listen, and if we close
our ears, we will never see anything.
Why are there so many
problems in the church today? Is it because
you do not hear the true voice of the cloud? By
contrast, only wish visions, images, superficialities or
appearances.
"And
when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone and they were silent, and in
those days told no one what they had seen" (Lc.9: 36). The
loneliness of Jesus tells us that the law no longer the schoolmaster who looked
after us, and from now on, the Church should concentrate on the message of Jesus
Christ and the evangelization of the world. (Gal
3:23-29) "23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the
faith which should afterwards be revealed. 24
Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be
justified by faith.25
But after faith has come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster, 26 are all sons
of God through faith in Christ Jesus, 27 for all of you who were baptized into
Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28
There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, there is neither male nor
female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29
And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the
promise. "
Concluding, the
Transfiguration of JesusTells us three key
things:
1. God is faithful,2. that
Jesus is the Christ and3. that man can become
God's child.
1)
How is our "mountain of the Transfiguration," that is, our relationship with
God?2)
Do we transform ourselves from time to time or maybe try to settle into the
comfort of our bower, as Peter wanted?3) Are we aware of our
spiritual journey?4)
Do we give more importance to see that listening?
The
word of God is clear and sharp as a two-edged sword.
