MUST BE LOVE MUTUAL

San Mateo Atenco, Sunday, August 11, 2013
MUST BE LOVE MUTUAL(2J 1:3-6) "3 Grace be with you, mercy, and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Father, in truth and love. 4 I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we received commandment from the Father. 5 And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another. 6 And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment to walk in love, as you heard from the beginning ".
We've all lived thinking only of ourselves. We've all lived as if the universe revolved around our little life. All we have ignored God's love. But Jesus came to show us a different way of living and we left his Sound doctrine of Christ.
In fact, (Romans 5:8) reads: "God shows his love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." In Jesus Christ, we demonstrate a completely different love love we show. God's love is a love of another kind, is a love which occupies a different level.
We can experience that love. (Romans 5:5) says that "God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit given to us." The Holy Spirit brings to our life experience of God's love, especially when we understand what Christ did on the cross for us.
That love we know in Jesus Christ brings the responsibility to love others too. Jesus taught us that the first commandment is to love the Lord our God, and the second is to love our neighbor. You can not separate the two things, if we come to know the love of God, we must learn to love others. However, it is very easy for that duty becomes something feigned, we give only an appearance of love for others.
How can we really love? The passage we will read today gives us some clues. In life, we are called to share God's love with two different groups of people: the people of the world, and our brothers in Christ. This passage teaches us how to love the two groups, they focus first love within the family of God, then to the outside, then back to the church and then back out the same way in life, we move between the two groups.
Let's open the Bible (Romans 12:9-21)"9 Let love be without dissimulation. Hate what is evil, cling to what is good.10 Love one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another.11 As diligence, not slothful, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord;

12 Rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer;13 Distributing to the necessity of saints, given to hospitality.14 Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.16 mind one toward not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own opinion.17 Repay no one evil for evil, but take the sight of all men. 18 If possible, as much as depends on you, live at peace with all men. 19 Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine, I will repay, saith the Lord.20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him, if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing will heap burning coals on his head.21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. "
The theme of the passage is found in verse 9. We will collect this passage three teachings that tell us how to truly love.

1) Love involves effort. Whether it's romantic love or love between brothers in Christ, love is something that involves an effort. For example, what verse 11 says. If we are to love others and thus serve the Lord, we must be diligent. We have to try. Here precisely is where many people get confused.
If someone does not like him, take his feelings as an excuse for not showing love. They say something like, "I'm not a hypocrite.'m Not going to talk well if I do not like." But hypocrisy has to do with intent, not feelings.
Being hypocritical is smiling at someone's face while talking ill of him behind his back. It be nice if you intend to hurt the person. But just because you do not feel love or tenderness, or even friendship, to the person does not mean you should not show love.
On the contrary! If only we had the responsibility to love people when they feel like it, then God would not tell us here that we should serve with the fervor of the Spirit. Love involves an effort.
Let me give an example. If I serve fried fish, and invite me to eat, I will not respond by saying: "I will make a great effort." To eat a fried fish, I have to make any effort, because I like fried fish! However, sometimes it takes effort to love.
For example the wife is no longer the same young lady who was with her husband on their honeymoon, however pains and wrinkles now ... Sure, the love is a decision and effort!.
However, the Holy Spirit is present to give us strength if we are willing to seek Him Usually something interesting happens when we make the effort to show love to people we do not like very well.
Our feelings towards them begin to change too! But everything has to start with an effort, with an intention. Love involves effort.
2) The second thing that this passage teach us about love is that love is put in the place of another. This is, in fact, the essence of love. The love is when only a soda, and the husband gives it to his wife because he loves her. The love is when we have the sensitivity to notice that another person is sad, rather than just being aware of our own feelings.
Look at the ways in which Paul calls us to put others first. In verse 10 we are called to respect and honoring each other.
Not to force others to respect, but to show respect and honor to all. Verse 16 completes the thought: "Do not think that they alone know." Verse 13 tells us to help those in need. Instead of focusing on our own needs, look for the person that God is calling us to help.
Verse 15 calls us to learn to empathize with others to celebrate with them their achievements, and mourn with them in their sorrows and losses. Do you realize how all this comes down to putting yourself in the other? Jesus said so: (Luke 6:31) "Do to others as you would have them do to you." Learn how to put yourself in the other person, to feel what you are feeling, to see their needs. This is love.
Note that this is precisely what God has done with us. He identified so much with us that He Himself became one of us. God became man. He could have sent an angel to bring us some presents, and would be quite generous. But he did much more than that; came to live in our flesh, to feel what we feel, to know our lives from within.
If God so loved us, we also can learn how. Love is put in the place of another. Now, so far we have spoken of love between brothers in Christ in the Christian family in the Church. How can we truly love the outsiders?
3) The answer is the third thing that we will collect from this passage: love returns good for evil. Notice what verse 14 says. Have you been persecuted for being a believer in Jesus Christ? Have fun of you? Have fun of your faith? When Jesus stood before his accusers, He remained silent. Not returned their offenses they winnowed him.He calls us to do the same, to respond to insults with blessing. (1 Peter 2:21-24) "21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: 22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: 23 Who, when He was reviled, did not revile: when he suffered, he threatened not, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24 He himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
Verse 17 tells us the same. Although we do wrong, we can not pay with the same currency; know Christ, and He has called us to be different. Would it follow that if we do this, we will be at peace with everyone? Not necessarily. Look at verse 18: we live in peace, as far as depends on us. Some people just do not want to live in peace with us. But we need to seek peace with all men, even as we can.
But what about all the damage we do? What do we do with those feelings of helplessness, frustration, courage? We leave them where - in the hands of God. Thus say verses 19 and 20. God says, "Vengeance is mine", and we can be sure that He will take care of justice. The fact that we do not take revenge does not mean that people who mistreat us is going to get away with it. We can trust that God will do justice.
If we remember that, we can live verse 21. Rather than succumb to the evil, we can overcome evil with good. Now I ask you: Do you really love? The love that should ignite your heart is not the love of others. If you love your brothers only to the extent that they love you, you will never improve yourself.
Rather, the spark of love you have to light a fire in our hearts is the love of God. It is only if you met that you love like Christ. It is only if your love is in your heart that you can surprise others with your love. Perhaps this morning God is talking about something you have to change. You may have to reconcile with someone. You may have to do something. I invite you, before God, to decide right now that you'll do.
